6:00-9:00pm KUANA ‘AUANA Workshop “Pua Ahihi”

This classic written by Mary Pukui and Maddy Lam tells the story of love as symbolized by a memorable lei from Lanihuli. Kuana brings his original choreography to this timeless mele.

Attendees will incorporate modern  ‘auana hula motions to communicate the poetry of the song. Students should have a basic hula background in order to take this workshop.  Students will be allowed to video hula, one time through, at the end of the class for practice purposes. Bring any materials needed for note taking. Bring water

9:30am-12:00pm KUANA HULA ‘AUANA Workshop “Ka’ohanakupaokamaka”

This upbeat hula is a tribute to the Kamaka family, makers of the famous Ukulele that bears their name.  Kuana’s original choreography celebrates the iconic instrument and the people that make up this legendary family.

Students should have a basic hula background in order to take this workshop.  Students will be allowed to video hula, one time through, at the end of the class for practice purposes. Bring any materials needed for note taking. Bring water.

12:00pm-1:00pm Lunch  (provided with full workshop package)

1:00pm-3:00pm NIIHAU EARRING Workshop

Join Kuana as he shares the history and heritage of the island of Niihau. Learn the techniques for gathering, sorting and piercing the rare shells of Niihau. Students will each receive a prepared packet of Niihau shells that enable them to make a pair of earrings valued at $150.  (Extra Earring kits available for $50. 18 inch Choker kits $350, Bracelet kits $175)

3:00-3:30pm Break

3:30-6:00pm KUANA KAHIKO Workshop (Hula Pahu)

Learn techniques and meaning behind ancient Hawaiian hula choreography.  Kahiko is a physically challenging course—students should have basic hula knowledge to take this class.  Students will be allowed to video Kahiko, one time through, at the end of the class for practice purposes. Bring any materials needed for note taking. Bring water.

9:30am-11:30am ‘Oli (Chant) Workshop Sunday September 6, 2020

Learn vocal techniques, appropriate usage and meaning behind Hawaiian ‘Oli (chant).  Kuana guides the class through one original ‘Oli explaining procedures, protocol and actual performance. Students will be allowed to video chant, one time through, at the end of the class for practice purposes. Bring any materials needed for note taking.

11:30pm-12:30pm Lunch  (provided with full workshop package)

 

12:30pm-3:00pm  KUANA “Hula Hairpiece Workshop”

This is a demonstration workshop offering multiple styles of hairpiece preparations. Students will learn how to select adornments to complement a chosen hula. Both synthetic and live ingredients are combined to demonstrate possibilities for performance.
