Our Palila is one of the rarest and most critically endangered birds in Hawaii. It is also one of the rarest birds on earth. The Palila is often associated with the native Hawaiian Māmane as it depends on the tree for its food and shelter. Beloved Māmane Trees are found In high elevation forests on the slopes of Mauna Kea.  Palila  feed off the flowers and buds of the tree and crack open the pods to eat the seeds, as well as, feed on insects attracted to the Māmane. Enough of the trees are found throughout the Mauna Kea forest reserve to feed out Palila all year long.
