Celebrate this Kalihi, O’ahu rain in this rousing pū’ili Hula. Each student will need one set (one for each hand).

FRIDAY  January 13, 2023  1:00pm-3:00pm   "MAUINUIAKAMA” Hula Auana Workshop

Mauinuiakama is one of the affectionate, poetic references to the island of Maui. This song takes you on a journey adrift at Haleakala bedecked in a lei of clouds. Flying aloft on the winds at Pu'ukukui as she sits on high, drowsy in the mists that surround her.

FRIDAY February 10, 2023  10:00am-12:00pm "‘Ke Aloha Olino” Hula Auana Workshop

This sweet and slow melody comes from the Hibari classic, Ai Sansan. I remember thinking when I heard this mele what a lovely hula it would make.

FRIDAY February 10, 2023 1:00pm-3:00pm  “Nā Lei Kiekie” Hula Auana Workshop

This original mele is a tribute to the pioneers of hula in Japan, Kim Ozaki, Kaleinani Hayakawa and Lehuanani Satake. These three sensei planted the seeds that have grown into a huge community of hula practitioners and dancers throughout Japan.

FRIDAY March 10, 2023  10:00am-12:00pm "Moku O Ka Rose”
Hula Auana Workshop

beautiful song inspired by a tune from my late Kumu, Johnny Lum Ho. I grew up in Halau Ka Ua Kani Lehua and performed one Merrie Monarch as a halau musician.  We sang, "Ka Ho'olaulea O Na Mokupuni" for his wahine auana.  This song and specifically this verse with signature Uncle Johnny melody line stuck with me forever. I built my song around his, "E Maui Kilakila O Haleakala"echoing it back to my own lyrics.  This fun song takes you on a ride around the island of the Rose, a musical tribute to Maui and my beloved Kumu.

FRIDAY March 10, 2023  1:00pm-3:00pm  "Ka’a Na Ale” Hula Auana Workshop.

This song reminds us that it is never too late to call out to one you love. It speaks of hope and better days to come.  This song has become one of my most often performed mele in Japan.

FRIDAY March 31, 2023 10:00am-12:00pm "Papa’i Hula (Crab Hula)” Auana Hula Workshop

This fun and fast mele sings the praises of that scuttling buggah, the crab.  Hunting for them by torchlight along the rocky shores of Molokai, we search high and low for this eight legged delicacy from the sea.

FRIDAY March 31, 2023 1:00pm-3:00pm "Le’a No Kaua” Hula Auana Workshop

A love song that speaks of two young lovers I witnessed at a party on Kauai. Their fun, flirtatiousness intensified as they prepared a variety of Hawaiian dishes. These strong desires are depicted in each verse by the style in which they prepared the dish. The rest I  will leave to your imagination.

FRIDAY June 2, 2023 10:00am-12:00pm "He Mokulele Pepa” Hula Auana Workshop

From the original Japanese song, 365 Nichi No Kamihikoki, this mele speaks of hope and likens life to a paper airplane, flying because of love.

FRIDAY June 2, 2023  1:00pm-3:00pm. “Aloha ‘I’o No” Hula Auana Workshop

I translated and arranged for hula this bittersweet Japanese love song originally called, True Love by Fujii Fumiya. I’ve always loved it’s catchy melody and tale of enduring love.

FRIDAY June 23, 2023 10:00am-12:00pm “Lei Moaulahiwa” Hula Auana Workshop

They are often the first to bid you Aloha upon your arrival to the Garden Isle and the last bidding you a fond A Hui Hou as you leave--the beloved chicken.  No matter where you go from City to Country on Kauai, chickens rule the roost. This fun, up tempo song sings their praises, especially as a feather Lei to adorn ones hat.

FRIDAY June 23, 2023 1:00pm-3:00pm "Kamakahikilani”  Hula Auana Workshop

Written for my hanai Mom, Annie Kamakahikilani Kelley Kanahele.  This song likens her beauty to that of the most cherished blossom. She was born and raised on the Island of Niihau and was a Master Lei maker and award winning composer.

FRIDAY July 7, 2023  10:00am-12:00pm  “Ka Nae Pakalana” Hula Auana Workshop

This is a song I wrote for my nieces and nephews to remember the valley our family comes from on Hawaii Island.  All of the kid's names are woven into this emotionally charged mele.

FRIDAY July 7, 2023 1:00pm-3:00pm “He Wehi Ke Aloha Paiū/Kani’ahē Hula Auana Workshop

This song was written for a girl I met in Reno who was part Paiute. The mele inoa honors the young girl.

FRIDAY August 4, 2023 10:00am-12:00pm  "Pua Kamila” Hula Auana Workshop

The song, Sazanka was huge in Japan.  I knew immediately I wanted to arrange this for hula tempo.  The mele tells of the Camelia blossom, able to flourish and bloom, despite the cold of winter's end.

FRIDAY August 4, 2023 1:00pm-3:00pm "Ohai Ali’i Kauhea” Hula Auana Workshop

My love for someone is likened to the fragrant and delicate 'Ohai ali'i blossom. This song has become one of my most popular hula standards.

FRIDAY September 1, 2023  10:00am-12:00pm  "Pina’o" Implement Hula Kahiko Workshop: Kala’au sticks

This playful implement hula utilizes the Kala'au sticks and tells the story of watching a dragonfly buzz and swoop through the air. Sometimes the enjoyment of simple things can bring the most satisfaction.

FRIDAY September 1, 2023  1:00pm-3:00pm  "Keawe’ikekahiali’iokamoku" Hula ‘Auana Workshop

This song chronicles a lineage from Hawaii Keawe. It is a tribute to this great leader from whom my family descended. This song preserves the names and history of that line.

FRIDAY November 3, 2023 10:00am-12:00pm “Ku’u Home Aloha” Hula Auana workshop

This song comes from my great uncle, Victor Kala. He was a well-known musician and composer born in the Waipi’o Valley of Hawaii Island.  When he moved to O’ahu, he was taken in by Tutu Kawelo and her ‘Ohana.  The song is a mahalo for all the Aloha they showed to him.

FRIDAY November 3, 2023  1:00pm-3:00pm “Nā ‘Ono Holopeki (Deer Hula)” Hula Auana Workshop

Affectionately called Deer Hula, this is a fun song that speaks of the wild game found on the island of Lana'i and how they can be a nuisance.  Wild deer hop fences and eat entire gardens. As much as the local residents want to complain, it's hard to beat a good venison steak! Tasty trouble, indeed.

FRIDAY December 15, 2023 Holiday Hula 10:00am-12:00pm  “Here Comes Santa in a Red Canoe”

A Holiday favorite that Is fun for any age.

FRIDAY December 15, 2023  1:00pm-3:00pm Holiday Hula “Iesu E Komo Mai” Hula Auana

Written by my hanai Mom, Ane Kanahele, this is a song that tells about taking Jesus into your heart. Her granddaughters were special guests on my Holiday CD performing this song.  I thought it would be a nice addition to our Holiday repertoire.
