The Nene is the official state bird of Hawaii and also the rarest goose in the world. They can be found on four of our islands: Kaua’I, Maui, Moloka’I and Hawaii Island. Their diet consists of berries, seeds, grasses, leaves and some floral blossoms. Nene mate for life, having one partner and usually return to the same area to make their nest. Their clutch is typically 2-4 eggs.
On our graphic tee, we have them depicted enjoying 'Ōhelo ‘ai berries. The tart Native Hawaiian fruit are found on the low lying shrub that is part of the heath family. Plants thrive at higher elevations on volcanic ash and soil found on Maui and Hawaii Island. Berries can found in red, yellow, purple and pinkish colors.
